Americans fears during the 1960's I believe were valid, for Communism takeover was spreading in other parts of the world and very quickly as well as politicians using that fear in elections which fueled the fears even deeper. During the early 60's with the Korean war, where America joined to aid South Korea from Communist North Korean take over than the Cold war and the Cuban Missile crisis. Americans were very much afraid and definitely had reason to be. Cubans themselves were fleeing to Florida to escape the rein of Communist takeover. President John F. Kennedy even made a television appearance to alert the American public on the Missiles in Cuba placed by the Soviets (The Cold War). The fear of a nuclear war was ever present, and both sides knew there would hardly be a winner if such a war should happen.
China- During the early 60's china was struggling own their own as a country to industrialize thus strengthening their economy, military powers, and agriculture which also referred to as "the great leap forward"(Jose). China was eventually taken over by the Communist Soviet Union regime. A result of a "communist" ways, a famine left sum 30 million people to die from starvation. In communist run countries government runs basically everything. The government didn't have proper production of food produced thus leaving people (where they are put) to face starvation. Though it was tried to be covered up by the government since the "leap forward" was to improve agriculture and ease hunger.
Italy- in the 60's Italians were enjoying a cultural transformation, freed from a fascist regime, people could now express themselves a little more. After WWII Italy was mainly an agricultural country, but given post war help Italians began to blossom with the industrial revolution, rebuilding the devastation caused by the war, Italy began to rise up, people were producing goods and also afforded higher incomes to have things they once couldn't (Italy 60-70). Internationally it was noticed how well Italy was doing and this attracted foreigners highly. With industries booming and reforms taking place, Italy's economic growth became known as the "economic miracle" (Italy), even the firsts and original Italian Mafia figured out how to profit and sustain business within the growing economy, winning over politicians, and doing business outside their territory.
