SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
As part of our STS 1 curriculum, we had an activity called the “Global Café”. The activity aimed to exchange information regarding Science and Technology in the national development. Here are the bits of information that I have gathered from my classmates:
First of all, the status of Science and Technology in the country is improving through the years but still relatively low compared to neighboring nations. According to WEF, the global competitiveness of the Philippines is 47th in rank.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Philippines, however, has a vision that in 2040, there will be a social economic innovation wherein a prosperous middle class society and a comfortable life for the Filipinos will occur. In order to achieve this, the DOST formulated a program entitled ‘Harmonized National Research and Development Agenda’. This will run from 2017 to 2022.
There is also this thing called Science for Change Program (S4CP). This aims to emphasize the importance of collaborative research among stakeholders in the government, industry, and the academe to leverage growth in the Philippine economy.
Just a little scientific trivia to end the synthesis: According to one of my classmates, the information he gathered states that each rubber molecule is made of 65,000 individual atoms. Isn’t that amazing?
