“School Bells, K-4”
Some of my fondest stories from my life reflect back on my childhood. My most vivid memory that comes to me is a tragic experience that I look back on and can laugh at now. From going back and remembering the many different stories I do have, I learned many valuable lessons.
It was later in the day, as I had already came home from school. My mom and Aunt Pegger were sitting on the cement in front of our garge enjoying some ice-cold pop and grilling hot dogs for dinner. They were busy talking and catching up since they both had a very busy life. It was a nice, late, summer day, so my sister Kayla and I were out cruising around on our brand new, blue bikes. I had just learned how to ride without training wheels so any chance I could get to ride my bike, I would. Mom yelled “be careful Rebecca” just as she saw me attempting to do something I should not. Kayla had done it and succeeded so i thought I could. In our front yard there was a ditch that we kept up on mowing so I tried to take my bike down so I could get good speed. Well, that time I went down it would cause me to not go down it ever again! When I went down the hill, my tire turned wrong and I went flying over the handlebars. The grass were not soft enough that day because when I landed, I heard a very loud popping sound. The sound was so loud my mom heard it. Mom, running as fast as her legs would let her, quickly turned into Dr. mom. She asked what seemed to be a million questions about it. She was frantic but quickly yelled “I told you to be careful!” I was just being a kid. She told my aunt to turn the grill off and that we were headed to the emergency room. Quickly, they loaded me up and took me to the Bad Axe hospital. There, they made me get an x-ray done. We knew there was something wrong, but sure enough, it came back with awful news. I had broken my left collar bone. I was devastated. I was signed up for soccer and I was forced to not play that year. Besides that, there was not much they could do for a broken collar bone than give me a brace to wear for eight weeks. Mom did not know how she was going to keep me contained since I was a very active, little, first grader who loved being in the outdoors. From this experience, that is now a story, I learned Mom is always right.
My story may not be the funniest one to read but it is valuable to me. Growing up is all about learning and living. I, unfortunately, had to break a bone to learn the hard way. My mom knows best and I was suddenly faced to except the fact to always listen to her. I appreciate every lesson in life I have learned.
