Brief:

Commonly, NSP is also known as fibre. The full wording of NSP is "Non Starch Polysaccharides". NSP is very useful to us since it prevents constipation and other related problems. We get fibre from group 1, group 2 and meat, fish and alternatives from group 4. We find many popular meals in the Maltese diet that provide us with NSP (fibre) such as pasta salad, pasta Bolognese, mashed or jacked potatoes with vegetables and various vegetable soups. One should eat foods mostly from group 1, group 2 and certain types of foods from group 4 to obtain enough fibre for a healthy diet.

Aim:

My aim is to find out what foods provide NSP in the Maltese diet. I have to find out what foods they cook often or whether they use wholewheat pasta or brown bread instead of white pasta or white bread. We are seeing a family eating a healthy dinner in diagram A.

These are all the steps that help me carry out this investigation about the source of NSP in the Maltese diet. It should be presented in the form of a flow chart.

What is NSP?

Another word for Non Starch Polysaccharides is Fibre. However the proper term is NSP. These Polysaccharides make up the cell wall of plant food. They form part of carbohydrate foods which our body cannot digest and later on it is passed out of the body as waste.

What are the functions of NSP?

Fibre is needed to keep the intestines healthy and prevent constipation and other related problems. This happens because NSP holds a lot of water with it and therefore our waste solid material remains soft with NSP and water and thus it is passed out easily out of our body. All plant based food contains fibre.

It is found in fruit, vegetables, wholegrain rice and pasta, wholemeal bread, many breakfast
