The Unknown Question
As I was growing up my mother constantly enforced the importance of school. Failing a test was unacceptable; failing a class would result in me getting severely punished. Every homework assignment given to me was done and I studied for every exam. As I always did I studied all night for my AP United States History class; also known as APUSH.
It was another ordinary day of junior year. I was driving with the windows down with the cold December air blowing in my face. It was a gloomy, cloudy day but I loved winter. I was ready for another day of midterm exams. Filled with confidence to pass another test, I parked and entered school. I walked down the smoothly paved cement hallways that occasionally had black dots which I assumed was old gum. I was humming a song I was listening to in the car and was walking to class with confidence.
I passed by many worried faces and many students walking with their books open. I assumed they were cramming before their exams. I thought to myself, "You guys should've studied last night. Cramming won't help." I did not worry about my APUSH test, I was ready for it and because I was ready I was kind of excited. As I was walking with a posture telling the world, "I am ready to ace my tests!" I bumped into my friend that had the same class as me.
"Hey Dabin! Are you ready for the APUSH exam? I heard it's the hardest exam out of all the midterms! I studied but I don't know if I studied enough! I need to get an A on this exam to get an A in the class! My mom said she'll let me get my license if I get straight A's this semester! I just need to get an A on this exam then..." She ranted with a worried voice. She always worried before a test, even for a quiz but today it began to annoy me so I decided to throw in a word of encouragement.
I cut her off saying, "Don't worry, you'll do fine! You did well on all the other APUSH exams!"
"Hopefully. Did you study? Are you ready?" She seemed a little calmer.
"I studied all night last night I think I got down." I was sure I was going to do well.
"Yea, well you're smart. You never get lower than a B plus on a test." She sounded jealous. "You should still look over your study guide before. I overheard someone from last period saying they didn't know the answers to half the test," she advised.
I giggled, "I think I'll be fine. It's in my back pack and I'm too lazy to take it out right now."
"Are you sure? You want me to get it out for you?"
"No it's okay, I'll do it later." I lied. I felt too lazy, plus I knew the materials like the back of my hands.
With a hurried voice she said, "Let's get to class I don't wanna walk in late." That was the end of our conversation.
My APUSH class was filled with University posters: Yale, Harvard, USC, and all the well-known Universities. I never really paid attention to these but for some reason these posters were very inviting today. I thought about myself getting accepted to the college of my choice. I thought it would be exciting to finally go to college.
My teacher interrupted, "Alright, everyone get a pencil out and put everything away."
I was going to look over my study guide, but it was too late. I didn't worry.
