The cultural and societal influences that have made Hinduism vital/very important to the region in which it originated is that in the old days, about thousands of years ago, the metaphysical beliefs in the Vedas were elaborated into various schools of thought by philosophers and sages. These beliefs were brought forth experientially by various methods of spiritual discipline. People who practice the Hindu religion try to spread their religion by teaching their children or others about Hinduism. This helps keep the religion strong. There are many sacred teachings that thought Hinduism; the earliest is called Samhitas which were hymns of praise in the worship of deities, then there was Brahmanas which were directions about performances of the ritual sacrifices to the deities, and the last one was the Upanishads which was the consisting of teachings from highly realized spiritual masters. This teaching explained the personal transformation that results from psychic participation in the ritual process (Fisher, Ch.3). The Sanatana Dharma honors the divine in so many forms that almost every day a religious celebration is being held in some part of India. There are sixteen religious holidays that are honored by the central government so that everyone can leave work to join the festival of worshipers. Gurus are often regarded as enlightened or "fully realized" individuals. A guru does not provide academic instruction. A Guru gives advice, example, and encouragement to those seeking enlightenment or realization.
