The Ramayana
This is a story everyone story well known to the people of Asia and Southeast Asia but it is also a well known story throughout the world. This story has but advertised and retold is many different styles, there are sculptors, painting and it is also televised.
Rama, who is the prince of Kosala is summoned by a sage named Viswamithra. The sage and the prince go on a journey to perform a yagna. The battle between good and evil is evident. After all this, Rama is seeking a lover. A young princess named Sita is looking for a worthy companion and to do so there is a certain test in which they must pass. The suitor must lift and string the bow of Shiva. Many try, and many fail but when the young prince Rama attempts this task he passes with flying colors. Attempting, lifting, stringing, and unfortunately he did not know his own strength breaks the bow of Shiva. The surprised look upon the witnesses of the act knew that Rama was the accepted suitor for the love of princess Sita.
The king decides to make Rama the prince regent. On that day Kooni, a servant of Dasartha, persuades Queen Kaikeyi that Rama would be detrimental to her and her son. So with the use of the queen's favors and her words, Queen Kaikeyi has Rama banned from the kingdom. He is thrown into the wilderness for fourteen years. In the place of Rama, Bharta is now the prince regent. While Rama isn't around Ravana abducts Sita and takes her to his lair in Lanka. Rama is crushed by what has happened to his wife. He gains the courage to go out and find her. Rama makes a deal with Vali, "The Monkey King". The monkey armies set out to find Sita and once the monkeys find her, she is given Rama's signet ring as a gift to give her hope.
To save Sita, the monkeys and Rama build a bridge across the ocean to attack Ravana. Rama defeats Ravana and reclaims his wife. When Sita is questioned about her faithfulness to Rama, she is banished by him even though she was pregnant. The sage Valmiki takes care of Sita. While there she has her twins. Valmiki brings Sita back to Rama after the twins perform the poem. Rama takes his wife back, but Sita calls on mother earth to take her if she has been true to Rama. Sita disappears into the earth and Rama was alone. Despite what happened, Rama still rules with power and is a great ruler. Rama walks into the Sarayu River and is sent to heaven as Lord Vishnu.
