Executive Summary
The Logistics Department at Sea Pack is responsible for some of the processes vital for the overall smooth operation of the Company. Currently for that area to work effectively we should start from the idea that all people who work there must be subject to proper training therefore, I suggest and I am confident that this training plan implemented, we will provide solutions to the problems that are occurring in terms of errors in the preparation and dispatch of orders. These indicators are taken as fallow: the first at the time of dispatched is registered by the inspector in charge which is responsible for this activity. The second in the complaints from carriers or customer, and is registered by the person in charge of receiving complaints and refunds also the mismanagement in inventory control of products and equipment.
It is noteworthy that efficiency problems have been found in current operations that could be resolved with increased training, and it has been deemed necessary to proceed, but with minimum effort and monetary investment on the part of the Company, which, in the past has proved to be problematic.
This training program is intended to develop training skills, address topics pertaining to logistics and expand communication with the other departments with which logistics interacts. It seeks to improve its member's knowledge of the facts and to impress how one's input and all their work affects the overall achievement of the objectives of the Company.
Introduction
Sea PAck has been leading company in the processing of seafood for over 20 years in the global market. Its owners are Nissan a Japanese conglomerate which is currently the 3rd largest company in the world of seafood processing. Although their specialty is shrimp, it is currently processing a new product for the Publix's Corporation which has been introduced into the national fast-food marketplace. The development and addition of this innovative product has subsequently increased Sea Pack production by 140% over its norm. In order to meet the demand, the Company has subsequently hired new staffing in all areas directly or indirectly involved in production, including the logistics department which had to go so far as to create a third shift to meet the needs of supply to production, expedient dispatch and efficient and accurate receipt of raw and dry materials including packaging and shipping materials.
This is a good year for Sea Pack because everything is designed to meet the need of this new national client. On the other hand is working to increase production with new customers and the production plant is being modernized with new equipment, to diversify production with new products such as salmon and clams.
The Logistics department is composed of a total of thirty dock employees divided into three shifts of eight hours each working Monday through Friday and also includes a support staff of 11 clerical employees, Shift Supervisors, Traffic Managers, Inventory Specialists and a departmental General Manager.
Benefits
Sea Pack currently have designed training programs for production areas in different jobs, for the areas of sales and marketing. The implementation of this plan of training in the area of logistics will improve operating efficiency problems previously detected.
The Program's main benefits that can be achieved are:
* Diagnostics training needs in the logistics area.
* Design a basic manual that contains the training topics so it can be used as a guide to its future implementation.
*To propose that in the near future the Company will continue training workshops with the expressed intent of developing the improvement of knowledge related to the position held by each worker in the logistics operation and its ramifications to the Company.
Theoretical Framework
The continuous changes that introduced the world markets require continuous improvement of skills of workers. In this modern theories of management are clear warning that "to face new challenges is necessary implementing strategies which foster the creation and development of new skills" (Leigh, 1992, p. 115).
According to Craig (1995),:
"The responsibility to train and develop the right people who are able to meet the new challenges of technological development cannot be exclusive educational institutions. It's just obvious and natural that companies also assume this responsibility especially a company hardly find a worker who fits perfectly into the needs of the organization "(Craig,1995, p. 219).
This is where training meets great value as it prepares to work within specific business activities.
The purpose of the training cannot simply give the worker instructions to the performance of his duties, but the company has a social responsibility to meet the needs of the full development of their workforce.
