Probation is a great tool that is currently being used in the correction system to help the inmate transition a little better than they normally would without it. I do see a down fall to the probation process and that is mostly in the probation officers themselves. Some of the probation officers have way too many cases and can't actually dedicate the amount of time necessary into each case as it should be. Being in the probation system I think it should be mandatory to see your probation officer at least one or twice a week, most people only see their probation officers once a month. I do not believe this is really helping the inmates with that transitional period that they need. So creating better structured probation systems where the person would have to check in everyday over a telephone computer system similar to clocking in. To insure the location of the person as well as in office visits at least once a week along with mandatory drug test at random.
My opinion of probation is a particular type of sentence for criminal defendants. Probation allows a convicted defendant to go free with a suspended sentence for a specified duration during good behavior. Probationers are placed under the supervision of a probation officer and must fulfill certain conditions. If a probationer violates a condition of probation, the court may place additional restrictions on the probationer or order the probationer to serve a term of imprisonment. Probation programs in the future should promote public safety and at the same time hold the offenders accountable for their actions. I do think it would be appropriate to increase restrictions imposed on probation. I say this because the role of the Department of Corrections is to protect the public, provide a safe and humane environment and to work in partnership with the community to provide programs and services to the offenders. If they were to increase restrictions on probation I think that most offenders would have a hard time getting probation and not just that but, it could also help the offenders to stay with good behavior. Any changes to increase restrictions on probation would be beneficial to both the offender and to the Criminal Justice System.
