In the twenty first century the job market has become more technologically dependent. You start representing yourself to employers from online profiles. People network professionally through technological means. Sometimes we are so consumed with our online personas that we forget how to represent ourselves in person. I found that the presentation was very informative, on the ways to properly communicate and represent ourselves when we are face to face with recruiters. Mrs. Champagne talked about being well informed of the job description and employer. She explained that it shows recruiters that someone is truly interested, and has what it takes to work at their company or agency. She informed us as well that the Center for Student Success assists students to update and develop a resume. There were also tips and ideas on how to catch employers' attention with personality in seconds of meeting them. It was also mentioned that job seekers should have compelling well informed questions prepared to ask recruiters.
The hour presentation had a lot of helpful information. One thing that really stuck for me, was when she talked about being well informed. It was suggested to look up the list of employers that would show up at the job fair. This is helpful to gain information on the company or agency and the job description. I found the advice surprising. I would have never thought to research the company or agency I was trying to get hired by. I personally believed that it was more important for them to know about me, and my qualifications. I learned that finding information on the company or agency, and job description helps to be able to adjust the way you communicate about yourself and your qualifications. It can also help to decide if you're truly interested in working at that company or agency; and under that job position.
The presentation Preparing for the Job Fair: Learn How Put Your Best Foot Forward was organized by the Center for Student Success. I had no idea that LaGuardia even provided that service. Mrs. Champagne informed us that any help that we might need with resumes and interviewing techniques we could get from the Center for Student Success. Also that LaGuardia has an Employment Services Center that has job posting information. That it assists students in trying to find jobs opportunities. I will definitely pay a visit to the Center for Student Success to clear up some questions that I have about building a resume. Also to acquaint myself with the office and the people that work there; networking is always important.
