Practical and Emotional Intelligence

There are many different types of intelligence. Psychologists define intelligence as the capacity to understand the world, think rationally, and use resources effectively when faces with challenges (Feldman, 2013). The two types of intelligence discussed here are practical and emotional intelligence. Practical intelligence is intelligence related to success in living (Feldman, 2013). Emotional intelligence is the set of skills that underlie the accurate assessment, evaluation, expression, and regulation of emotions (Feldman, 2013).

These two types of intelligence do serve a purpose in the workplace. Practical intelligence is a learned through observing others' behavior (Feldman, 2013). To have a high level of practical intelligence means that an individual can learn a principle, turn around and apply it appropriately (Feldman, 2013). Someone in the workplace with practical intelligence can take everyday problems and solve them accordingly. Emotional intelligence in the workplace is very helpful to have. This is where the ability to work well with others comes from. Emotional intelligence is a necessity in honing in others feelings and responding to other needs. Empathy for others, self-awareness, and social skills are high attributes to add to any workplace and these form through emotional intelligence (Feldman, 2013).

Two popular television characters that I believed displays each type of intelligence would be Penny from Big Bang Theory, and Dr. Huang from Law and Order SVU. I believe Penny displays practical intelligence because she seems as though even though she is not academically bright she does seem to have "street smarts". I do feel that she learns more through observing others and notices the intellect from watching the other people on the show. I believe Dr. Huang displays emotional intelligence as the psychologist on Law and Order SVU. The compassion that he shows for the individuals and the victims interviewed and brought in to the police station. He, as a psychologists, needs to have those attributes of caring and empathy toward others feelings.
