Poliomyelitis, also known as polio, is a disease of inflammation and destruction of motor neurons caused by a poliovirus. The virus invades the nervous system and potentially can paralyze a person. Symptoms can vary from fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, and neck stiffness. The virus can only live in humans, a quality that makes purge viable.
The epidemic peaked here in the US in 1952. It had affected nearly 58,000 people, developing mostly in children and young adults. Some became critically ill, others crippled but not paralyzed. Thanks to Dr. Jonas Salk and his team of researchers at the University of Pitts burgh, who developed the first polio vaccine, in 1955.
There are now two types of vaccinations given to prevent polio. One is IPV - inactivated polio vaccine; the other is OPV - oral polio vaccine. OPV is used throughout the world, however IPV is the only vaccine used here in the United States since 2000. Though polio is very rare here in the Western hemisphere, it is still a considerable problem in parts of Africa and Asia.
