Polio

Polio - caused by a virus called polio-virus.

Symptoms- fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness in the neck and pain in the limbs.

Length- Sickness can last for a few days but the paralysis can last a lifetime

How Disease spreads- person to person contact, spread through faeces, in poor hygiene environments

Treatments and vaccines- The Iron Lung, no drug developed has proven to be effective,so treatment is entirely symptomatic. Moist heat is coupled with physical therapy to stimulate the muscles and antispasmodic drugs are given to produce muscular relaxation.

Who it Effects- mainly children under 5, but also adults.

Tuberculosis

Pathogen-caused by a bacteria Mycobacterium

Symptoms-chronic cough with blood tinge spudon, fevers, night sweats, and weight loss

Length-Last for months, up to years.

How Disease Spreads-Inhaling small particles of infected sputum, spread person to person. Infected Cows to Humans

Treatments and Vaccines- must undergo a series of treaments including, rifampin, pyrazinamide and ethambutol

Who it Effects-people with HIV, in prison, people in nursing homes, and third world country's

Small Pox

Pathogen-caused by a virus called variola

Symptom-Fever, Chills, Headache, vomiting, severe muscle aches, rash with raised bumps that scab and fall off

Length-3 to 4 weeks

How Disease Spreads- close contact with the virus, Inhaling the Virus

treatments and vaccines- VIG vaccine to prevent, no treatment besides relief of symptoms

Who it effects- people who have come in contact with the virus

Mumps

pathogen- virus

Symptom-fever, headache, loss of appetite, swelling and pain in the parotid gland, lead to inflamation of the brain and other organs

Length- can last 10-25 days but normally only 12-18.

How Disease Spreads- through saliva

Treatments and Vaccines- get a vaccine, no treatments once infected

Who it Effects-5 to 14 year olds, and young adults

Malaria

Pathogens-plasmodium parasite carried by Mosquitoes

symptoms- drowsiness, anemia, chills, headache, fever, poor appetite, vomiting, muscle pains, and Severe sweating.

Length-cured in 2 weeks

How Disease Spreads-by birth, through mosquitoes.
