Persians

The biggest news just came in. The Persians live east of the Fertile Crescent, where the Medes ruled the land. The land is called Media. Persians arrived in Media close to 1000 B.C. They started their living by building tiny kingdoms. The Persians thrived in trade. While the Persians lived in Media, their tiny kingdoms grew in power and soon the Persians would rule Media.

Cyrus the Great is really great. Since the Persians built their kingdoms in Media the Medes controlled them and Persia. Until a genius, and powerful Persian king came along his name was Cyrus, he got the nickname of Cyrus the Great. Cyrus was visioning of conquering the lands of Persia and having all of them unite to be one large empire. The first land Cyrus conquered was Anatolia. Between the years of 550 and 539B.C. he conquered lands that were once owned by the Assyrians and Chaldeans. Cyrus had to have a way to control the different people that live in his empire. Cyrus didn't want the Persians to be like the Assyrians who were cruel to all their people (the Assyrians were not very nice people I would not want to live back then).

The rise of Darius well let's make it short and sweet, he built a bigger empire-the distance from New York to Los Angles- he was more powerful.

My next write on the Persians will be in next week's paper.

Math and Inventions

Sumerians were good problem solving people. They were very advanced in development and were good at inventing things to improve their lives.

One early invention was the plow. The plow was invented around 6000 B.C. Another early invention was the wheel that was approximately invented around 3500B.C.

The plow was a very important tool because it was used to help farmers. The first model of the plow was a digging stick with handles. The plow had to be rather big because it could either be pulled or pushed. At first they used people to pull and push them then later the used animals, poor animals. The wheel was used in many ways mostly for wagons to transport things one place to another. Another type of wheel was a potter's wheel. That was used to make better quality pots and to make the pots a lot faster.

Sumerians developed arithmetic, the old word for mathematics; it was mostly used to keep records crops and trade. The Sumerian number system was based off the number 60. Even to this day we base things off 60. An example is 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour.
