The purpose of this analytical exposition is to justify recomendations to improve equity and acess to ballroom dance. Figueroas framework was developed by Professer Peter Figueroa. This was to help investigate racism in the United Kingdom originally to look at equity and access. How ever this tool will be useful to ballroom dance because its components as it breaks up into five seperate levels. The cultural level, structual, institutional, interpersonal and the individual level. Each one of these levels directly affect the other levels. Quote from page 10 - "it also indicates the different functions that each of us can play in creating or removing, reinforcing or eliminating barriers, inequities and access in exercise, sport and physical activity. We cannont overome all barriers by simply acting at the individual level."
Society is full of written and unwritten rules that impact upon the access to sport and phsyical activity for australians right across the country. These rules are constantl changing to stay with the times, but some are so entrenched that they present as serious barriers to particiaption for some members of society to the extent that they may be considered discriminatory. An example for a barrier with ballroom dance would be that people might not know about dancing clubs in their area or it isn't being taught at most of the high schools since only a handfull of schools do. This barrier refers to the interpersonal level.
My number one reccomendation is to develop a club strategy. At the moment i am unware of any ballroom dance clubs in the local area, so i have a strategy to use to make a ballroom dance club. One of the strategies that will be put forth in order to try and overcome the barrier of young tenneager boys thinking that balroom dancing is not a suitable sport or physical activity. I believe that this problem has started in primary schools with younger studens not being exposed to ballroom dance. Because these young students are not exposed to the thought that ballrom dancing is a sport they often assume that it is just dancing for older people. I beleive that because this barrier often starts with primary school it can also be overcome during primary school. The first part to overcoming this strategy would be to expose younger students to ballroom dance. I will then set up carious meetings with the primary schools in on the sunshine coast starting with Caloundra. To sace time and money the Currimundi primary school hall will be hired out that a meeting with all of the principles from the surrounding area.
