Industry and the operational context

The logistic and supply management industry has grown to become a significant sector in most economies of the world. But in most countries like china and other fast developing nations, the growth of international trade has led to the rapid demand of logistic services without the expansion of the infrastructure. On the other hand, companies are making significant amount of investments in developing the transport related infrastructure (Schroeder &Ahmad (2003). The most prominent challenge faced by most logistic companies is the shortage of logistic and supply management professionals to offer customers exemplary service. The lack of skilled employees coupled with the insufficient infrastructure has been said to be the cause of loss or damages of the goods in transit.

Background of Toll Company

Toll Company is one of the leading companies in provision of integrated logistics in the Asia-Pacific region. The company has a network of over 1200 sites that have been established in 55 countries. The company is appropriately equipped with infrastructure that includes the roads fleets, warehouses, shipping and Air freight capacity technology (Aldin & Stahre, 2003). The company aims to use cutting edge technology to ensure efficiencies and effectively deliver services to the customers according to the best practise in supply and logistics management.

Strategic Human resource issues encountered in the company

Logistic business has experienced significant growth globally in the recent past. This is due to the rampant growth of the international trade in which is characterised by huge flow of goods. Ward & Anand (2004) argued that the increase in the demand of the logistic services has by passed the rate of the development of the required infrastructure in some logistic companies. This is very dangerous since it increases the exposure of the risk of the employees. However, the distinct shortage of skilled labour to work as supply and logistics experts in the companies is the principal challenge for the Human resource (Armstrong, 2007). There is need of more expertise to manage the information systems. As a matter of fact, the lack of skilled workers and inadequate logistic infrastructure has been said to be the main reason for the high level of loss, deterioration of stocks and damages of especially perishable goods handled by the logistic companies (Anand, & Ward, 2004).

Contribution to the company

The challenge that is found in the logistics business provides tremendous opportunity for the companies that utilize advanced logistic systems and employ professional manpower to grow their market significantly. As such, proper management of the Human resource in a logistic company like Toll will significantly increase its market share because the customers will be assured that the goods will be delivered (Lieb, 2008).

Stahre & ldin, (2003) posits that since the HRM practises that is developed in the process of dealing with change management in Toll logistic company will contribute to the quality of services offered by the organisation since it will improve the skills, knowledge and attitude of the employees, the organisation capabilities will be enhanced to perform better. According to Angeles, (2000) ensuring that best practise HRM practises guides not only induction and recruitment but also in enhancing performance management, training and developing the workers professionally.

Proper system offering competitive salaries and very competitive employee benefits will be developing to not only attract the best talents in the supply and management industry but also to retain and motivate them to offer the best services (Joseph, 2001). A new HRM system will be designed that will help in the assessment of employees outputs and quality.
