Coroner, medical examiner, or just simply Doctor. Forensic Pathologists have a great many labels, but just what do they do and, more importantly, what is Forensic Pathology? This paper will attempt to describe, in depth, the science of Forensic Pathology, as well as the duties and qualifications. First, what is forensics? Forensics comes from the Latin forēnsis, meaning "of or before the forum". In Roman times, the forum was a large public square, reserved for announcements, markets, and plays. The forum also functioned as a type of courtroom, where a case would be before a group of individuals. In modern terminology, forensics is a practical synonym for "related to courts". Forensics is also known today as forensic science. Pathology comes from the Ancient Greeks words πάθος, pathos, "feeling, suffering"; and -λογία, -logia, "the study of". Therefore Pathology is the study of suffering, or rather, the study of why a person suffered. Combined, Forensic science and Pathology is literally the study of suffering for legal purposes. A better translation would be determining the cause of death by examination for legal purposes. So what are the duties and responsibilities of a forensic pathologist? They are as follows: 1. Performs autopsies/postmortem examinations to determine the cause of death.
