Short Essay 1.1
Bring your materials to class daily; texts, notebooks, pens, calculators, and syllabi. I chose this as the first rule, of the golden rules of class etiquette because I personally feel like it is the most important. For me, if I walk into class without any of this I would miss out on so much information. I have classes that lasts four to five hours and not being able to take notes or missing valuable tools that can help me understand something could extremely hinder my learning time. By having these tools with me in class each day I can set a positive self-image of showing how responsible I am.
Turn in papers, projects, and assignments on time. Many instructors do not accept late work. This is the second rule of class etiquette that I have chosen. In correlation with the first rule I also believe this rule has to do with a person being responsible. The most important thing, which can also be the hardest, is to not procrastinate when it comes to having assignments and due dates. Unfortunately I am a person who in the past has procrastinated on many assignments. For me, sometimes working under pressure helps me think quicker. For example, starting a writing assignment the day before it is due, of course I stress out about it but I end up getting it done. For this rule in order for me to promote something positive I would have to not procrastinate and maybe try to get things done ahead of time.
Participate in class. Ask questions, bring current events to the discussion, and contribute with personal experiences. This is the third and final rule of class etiquette that I have chosen. Being involved inside the classroom can help you understand whatever is being talked about in a discussion. When you ask questions you clear up something that you or maybe another student didn’t quite understand. Participation is helpful to me because I understand more. For example, a class discussion on a new medical procedure unknown by me. As the professor is speaking she may be using words that I have never heard but asking and having her explain the meaning, I can get the advantage of understanding what is being said. Something positive that can be gained from this is that maybe by me asking more questions and being responsive it could cause other people to get the courage to do the same, again showing a positive image.
In conclusion, the three rules that I have chosen among the many important ones from this chapter are all very important. The three I chose to talk about are the most important for me because they are all ones that can help me succeed. These rules can help me obtain my ultimate goal of graduating as nurse which is something very important to me.
