Emirates Hospital Change Model
1. A brief history of the organization and background of the problems
Emirates Hospital is a public healthcare facility that provides health and medical services to patients needing care in the UAE. The hospital has been established in 1976 and has continued to grow over the years. The hospital has several medical specialties and counts over a total of 2700 employees, which include doctors, nursing staff, and administrative staff. The employees of the hospital all work together in order to deliver quality medical care to the patients, which is known for excellence. The most important part of the mission of the hospital is the fact that it cares for patients’ lives, which means that this is the most important thing to care about. In addition to that, the hospital has a research team that works primarily on making sure the hospital used technology is up to date, and that they have the latest medical technological innovations. The main goal of the hospital is to ensure that the hospital is a place for wellbeing and medical attention, where the patients are the primary focus, and the devoted staff would do everything in their power to make sure the patients have the most relaxing and less painful/stressful stay possible. Their goal is also to ensure that all the patients are looked after by the best qualified and trained medical staff.
The primary reason why I have picked Emirates Hospital to use for this assignment is because I was able to get a contact person to assist me with the process of getting valuable information on my topic, and which therefore helped me gain considerable amounts of information on the change model that might be needed to improve a certain weakness of Emirates Hospital.
One main issue that has been noted from my previous assessment of the hospital’s culture assessment is that there is a history of conflicts between the personnel, which sometimes comes in their way of their ultimate performance. The employees of the hospital seem to love their jobs and be qualified for it, and they also have a lot of devotion to provide quality care to the patients. But, like any kind of company’s out there, Emirates Hospital also faces a lot of challenges and problems, which affect how the mission is being completed. The problem noted at the hospital is concerned with conflicts that are sometimes happening among the nursing employees and medical employees, and this is a very serious issue since the nursing employees represent the direct contact with the patients. Moreover, the nature of their job is also critical, no mistakes are allows to be made, because they involve the lives of people, and the slightest mistake could lead to a deadly error. Therefore, addressing these conflicts is a must in order to ensure the patients get the best care possible.
2. Organization chart, mission, vision, core values (10 points)
Organizational Chart:
While I tried to get the organizational chart for the hospital, I could not find one online and my contact did not have one to provide me. He only stated that the organizational chart is functional, where the hospital is organized around functions, and where the decisions are made from top to bottom by respecting the hierarchy.
Mission:
The hospital’s mission statement as follows “Our Mission at Emirates Hospital is to provide high quality, faster, better and friendlier service consistent with the needs and beliefs of our patients, employees, visitors and vendors in a comfortable and secure environment.
Vision:
The vision statement of Emirates Hospital is “Emirates Hospital provides its patients with the highest medical care possible, with a very qualified medical staff that, we exist to make your stay the safest and medical well-being our first priority. Our goal is to continue to provide you with the best care through the latest medical technology”.
Core values:
When it comes to Emirates Hospital core values, the following is the list of the major core values identified.
• Care: Caring for our patients is our Number 1 priority and our dedicated staff to that purpose.
• Safety: we offers patients a safe and professional environment, with highly qualified nursing and technical staff who were chosen for their vast experience.
• Excellence & Continuous Improvement: It is our belief that success comes with the constant desire to improve, this is why our research team is always seeking to find the best medical technology to provide the best and excellent medical care.
• Patients First: Our patients are our #1 priority.
• Teamwork: Nothing can be accomplished without a strong team.
3. A description of one of the OD problems found there and its causes
Djosvolt (2012) in his article on team performance and conflict indicates that conflict in teams is an inevitable thing, he also mentions that high performing groups or teams should have consensus, and any conflict may result in dysfunctional teams that might affect the team’s performance. This scenario is the same thing occurring at Emirates Hospital where a major downfall of the performance is associated with the existing conflicts between certain nursing staff members. This might be due to various reasons, some nurses may have strong personalities that they collide, others may have different medical/professional opinions, along with many other reasons that could result in conflict in teams. This issue of conflict raises a lot of concerns to the hospital management, as it can certainly become a serious barrier to its performance. In fact, it is even more serious because it involves the nursing and medical staff who work directly with the patients, therefore any kind of conflict may cloud their judgment or decisions related to a certain patient, which is not needed, because a slight mistake can cause
