My friend Okonkwo was among the greatest warriors Umuofia has ever had. Unfortunately he died in grief. Okonkwo was unique and their was no one like him. I will tell you the merits he achieved, the life he lived, and lastly what caused his tragedy. Okonkwo was not only my best friend, but he was also my brother. This is an obituary on the great Okonkwo.

To introduce Okonkwo, I would like to start with his life. Okonkwo was a very serious person. The ways he acted around his family expressed his stringent behavior. He would beat his wives and children until they bled if they did not perform a task correctly. Why was he so strict? Okonkwo hated his father and his ways. His father was a disappointment to him because of his laziness. So since his father was not strict, he had to be strict. Unfortunately, his rage cost him greatly in certain events. Examples of this included; beating his wife during the week of peace, killing Ikemefuna, and cutting of the Christian missionary's head. Despite his behavior, Okonkwo was a hard worker, and in the harshest seasons to grow yams, he would still grow many. He was also very determined in what he did. When the Christians invaded Umuofia, he tried his best to convince people to send them away and fight. He was Pro-Umuofia in everything he did and supported the culture and tradition. These traits made him our leader early on, and he was a very good one too.

Okonkwo was a very meritorious man. He had accomplished many great things. Though he had not inherited any good reputation from his father, he still prospered. His first rise to fame was throwing Amalinze "The Cat" in a wrestling match at the age of 18, who was a defending champion. "As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat". Everyone saw Okonkwo as powerful person. His hard work in the farm also shows achievements. He had two barns full of yams. Other achievements also included him having three wives, which other men in Umuofia had a hard time getting. All these achievements accumulated and finally Okonkwo was chosen to be the leader of our clan.

Unfortunately, Okonkwo's time had come. The cause of his death? Himself. Why did he kill himself? When Okonkwo came back from exile, he was in fiery rage and wanted war with the Christians. I agreed with him too. To his despair, he saw how weak the clan had become and how many of them have joined the Church. We were also captured by the District Commissioner for days without food and water. This only made Okonkwo even more angry. So he had a meeting with all of Umuofia to discuss a war with the Church. When the Christian missionaries came to stop the meeting, Okonkwo cut of one of their heads. Seeing the terror in Umuofia's eyes when they witnessed the death, Okonkwo left us knowing their would not be a war. "He knew that Umuofia would not go to war. He knew because they had let the other messengers
