Main issue here was I lacked the knowledge in the kernel development area. My argument was that I need at least 1-2 months for ramping up knowledge on the new role. But my manager was expecting deliverables from me within a month from the new role. Also, the knowledge I developed in the UI development area will not be useful for the new role. Apart from the knowledge perspective, I lacked the interest in working in the kernel developer role. I was more interested in the UI developer role.
Normally, I am a kind of a person who likes to learn more and improve continuously. Knowing this, they thought I would be suitable for the new role. I argued that I am more interested and knowledgeable in UI developer and would like to stay in the same role. But my manager and team leader told me that there are enough people already working in the UI development area. They needed great potential people like me to work in the new challenging role of kernel developer. They were also in need of new people to work on Kernel and they were not in a position to hire new people. My manager convinced me that there are not enough challenging tasks in UI development in upcoming days and I finally agreed to work in the new role.
There were so advantages for me in the new role which I did not understand before taking the new role. Working in two different components in same product gave me a broader picture of the product. I used to think about the product only from end-user perspective earlier. After working on kernel, I was able to understand underlying system in the product. My knowledge on the operating systems was not used when I was working in UI development. But my new role demanded a lot of knowledge on operating systems. I did not realize the importance of other aspects before taking on new role. I was satisfied with the new role after few months.
