Life is full of challenges and learning experiences. As we grow, we learn, change our minds, and find ourselves. When going to college you learn about what your life is in the future and what to expect when going in to the field that a person has chosen. People tend to stick their values that they learned growing up and that they have developed over time. Past experiences shape us for who we are and who we are going to be. Family shapes us and our culture and others culture help shape us. Going into the human services field we need to be prepared how to put our beliefs and values to the side and do what is best for the clients that we are trying to help.
Professionals who are in the field of helping others have a different relationship with the clients then they do their own friends and family. This type of relationship consists of trust, learning about the client, and sharing a little about oneself. This is how it needs to be. As professionals we need to keep our own beliefs and values at a standstill. We do not want to make judgments because then the client will not trust us. Finding the best possible solution for the client may conflict with our own beliefs and values. However, if this fits with their beliefs and values then it is right.
My beliefs are simple really; they tend not to conflict with many people. I simply believe that we should do what is best for ourselves as long as it does not hurt anyone else. We should not make assumptions about other people because we do not know where they have been or what their story is. Take every experience for what it is and what we can learn from it. People are different and deserve to be proud for being different. Also, just like many people have heard "treat others how you want to be treated". This is the root to all my personal beliefs.
My values are also pretty simple. I know that everyone has religious beliefs that are different from others. This is their right, and I do not disagree with people following their own faith. I believe that we should value our families, friends and all the people who are close to us. People need to respect the fact that we are all different, and it can be a learning experience when dealing with others who are different. Even if others make us mad whether it be a spouse, child, or any other person we should keep our hands to ourselves. This is a main value that I stand by.
My past experiences have taught me a great deal. I think I would be able to handle many different kinds of people because of my past. I grew up around a lot of different cultures, sexual preferences and religions. I am a very open minded person who takes in what I can and learn from the differences people have. I grew up in a way that many others did not. I have always been surrounded by differences so I am not a person to make quick judgments.
