My place: The Place for Diversity Multimedia Analysis
Diversity is something that affects a large spectrum of individuals allowing each to be unique. The My Place multimedia was a great tool in exploiting how easily people tend to put a label on others by reading a simple excerpt. I was not able to actually read the brief bio and determine for fact that the person I chose was the correct person I was reading about there were just aspects that did not appear to fit the description. Throughout my life I have learned that you can never truly judge a book by its cover.
There are many characteristics that encompass diversity other than race and gender. Some of these can include a person's religion, socioeconomic status and weight. Some visual characteristics that many people think of first when asked to define the characteristics of someone may include religion, national origin, age, and sexual orientation, race and gender. These are visible characteristics that can help to identify a person, but it is so easy to misinterpret if you go on these alone. For example, a person with long hair from behind seen walking down the hall would most likely be a woman, while this not necessarily true. There was a time when a person's gender could be identified by their hair length. This is no longer the case for either gender. Another instance would be a person seen entering a restaurant wearing an apron, a white chef's hat would most likely be a chef but if the same person, a female with brown complexion and is standing near a kitchen she could be seen as the waitress. Without the embellishment of the chef's hat, and without communication, we cannot tell whether she is the chef or a waitress.
How often do we make judgments from mere superficial characteristics? I have been one of those persons who have judged people based on superficial characteristics. Now with maturity and experience I try to get the facts, not just base my decision off what I see and more importantly look past the superficial at the heart of a person. This has allowed me to put the brakes on the tendencies and not to judge based on superficial characteristics. I have had my share of negative experiences in the past and the result was a very humbling. Now, I try to take time to ask a few questions and educate myself before I make a judgment based on superficial characteristics.
As an investment in our future and gift to the next generation to lead by example, embrace each other and never judge people on the basis of their skin color, race, gender, and their sexual orientation. I think this is a power tool to be place in our life tool box, learning to understand these differences will help us to live a more peaceful existence. Most often as a society fall short due to lack of education and most all fear of the unknown. Diversity touches lives of individuals all over the world.
