Multiculturalism
Abstract
Multiculturalism refers to such a cultural diversity stance: a variety of civilized entities and their cultural ideas have the right to live with each other should be peaceful coexistence, said that China "same but different". The current situation of multiculturalism is complicated, and many people cannot accept multiculturalism. There are many variations on these themes as will be discussed in this paper.
Key words: multiculturalism, culture, cause, difficulty, difference, acceptance.
Introduction
Faced with the problem of multiculturalism, the whole world is thinking how to solve it. Globalization widely caused multiculturalism, it was brought about by colonization and it simply means coming together of different cultures, societies and economics. It is also through this process that the distance to another became relatively smaller. Multipolarization is another main cause of Multiculturalism, especially communication between Power countries, which brought a big effect. And, there are a lot of differences among different countries from values to language. Americans believe in free competition and individualism, while, Chinese prefers collective decision-making, emphasizing the collective wisdom.
Multiculturalism is also a part of any country. There are Jews in Germany, Poles in Ireland, Asians in Canada and so on. I believe multiculturalism is a good idea. For instance, China applies the theory to the minority and migrant and get a good result of a harmony country.
The importance of understanding multiculturalism
Multiculturalism also benefits a country a lot, which has now been enriched with intellectual, artistic and others.
Additionally, the world is going to merge and there is more and more communications to be asked between people, company or organizations from different culture. The divergence increases misunderstands and barriers between the two sides, which leads to the failure of the communications.
Besides, there exists multiculturalism in nation, such as China and USA. The discrepancy among different ethnics is a matter to be focused on by business man. Put it another way, people should respect culture coming from minority.
A national standard is out of the question because of the fact that different parts of the country contain certain concentrations of nationalities. An example of this is the high concentration of Asians in British Columbia or Blacks in the East. Nonetheless, teachers are at the top of the agenda when it comes to multiculturalism. They can do the most for children during the early years of learning, when kids are most impressionable. By engaging students in activities that follow the lines of their multicultural curriculum, they can open young minds while making learning fun.
The acceptance of multiculturalism
We cannot deny that there are quantities of obstacles and barriers to accept multiculturalism, new things are difficult to understand and accept by public. The words in Chinese language, such as "哪里,哪里","过奖,过奖"and "还差得远", are difficult to understand by the west person, for they prefer to use the word, such as " thank you" in the same situation. The thinking way is very different from Chinese and English, which leads to confuse and misunderstood. But, we must try our best to overcome the difficulties. The situation is not good to be expected.
The white is not the people to respect the culture from minority, although, the west is the first to put forward the theory. A 5-study investigation of reactions of dominant group members (i.e., White Americans) to diversity (relative to racial minority reactions) provides evidence of implicit and explicit associations between multiculturalism and exclusion and of a relationship between perceived exclusion and reactions to diversity. In Study 1, Whites but not racial minorities were faster in an implicit association task at pairing multiculturalism with exclusion than with inclusion. This association diminished in Study 2 through a subtle framing of diversity efforts as targeted toward all groups, including European Americans. In Study 3, in a "Me/Not Me" task, Whites were less likely than minorities to pair multiculturalism concepts with the self and were slower in responding to multiculturalism concepts. Furthermore, associating multiculturalism with the self (Study 3) or feeling included in organizational diversity (Study 4) predicted Whites' endorsement of diversity and also accounted for the oft-cited group status difference in support for
