Within the movie, Monsoon Wedding, there are three couples who demonstrate ideas of love and happiness: Aditi and Hemant, Lalit and Pimmi, and finally Dubey and Alice. The relationships can be compared to those from the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, with Janie as the protagonist.
Aditi and Hemant's relationship alters the most as the movie progresses. In the beginning, their arranged marriage based upon convenience is very similar to Janie and Logan's marriage. However, Aditi and Hemant's relationship begins with them admiring each other and goes so far as to Aditi admitting to Ria that Hermant is a good man. Their love is tested when Aditi reveals her sexual encounters with Vikram. Surprisingly, Hemant is able to forgive her and Aditi understands that true love prevails above all. Janie feels the same way when she is in a relationship with Joe and believes that her love will solve all her problems. She runs away from Logan because she thinks she is headed towards a relationship with Joe that revolves around love, however she is mistaken. Aditi and Hemant's relationship is mutual, which explains why their relationship is also similar to that of Janie and Tea Cake. In reality, Aditi and Hemant's relationship can be compared to any one of Janie's relationships depending on the stage of their relationship
Lalit and Pimmi's relationship can also be compared to two of Janie's relationships, depending on the time. At the start, Lalit and Pammi's relationship resembles Janie and Logan's, as they do not convey any love towards each other. The marriages for both couples are quite similar, as both relationships lack love, and rather are getting married out of convenience and economic stability. Nevertheless, Lalit and Pimmi's relationship progresses and soon resembles Janie and Tea Cake's in the sense that they are beginning to rely upon and trust each other. A vivid example of that is when Lalit is crying and Pimmi comforts her and ends up sleeping with her. His desire to sleep with her alters from simply sleeping to supporting and expressing his feelings toward her. Lalit and Pimmi's relationship evolves and can be compared to Janie's relationships with Logan and Tea Cake.
Dubey and Alice's relationship is quite similar to that of Janie and Tea Cake's for multiple reasons. The two relationships both have one member being of a lower class than the other; Tea Cake in the book and Alice in the movie. Another similarity is that in both relationships the females begin by not displaying interest for the male. Janie has little hope for a good relationship with Tea Cake and Alice is scared and angry at Dubey for spying on her while she was trying on the wedding jewelry and clothing. Nevertheless, both couples are able to overcome their difficulties and result in a love-filled relationship. All three relationships with in the novel
