4. Would you consider it a greater compliment for someone to call you a good manager or a good leader? Why? Do you believe you can be both?
Great leaders are great managers.
Leadership is entirely different. It is associated with taking an organization into the future, finding opportunities that are coming at it faster and faster and successfully exploiting those opportunities. Leadership is about vision, about people buying in, about empowerment and, most of all, about producing useful change. Leadership is not about attributes, it's about behavior.
Managers climb the corporate ladder because they are good managers. Yet, when they get to executive positions they fail because they need to lead, and unfortunately good managers rarely make good leaders. There needs to be a transition route for leaders, or a selection process, or an acceptance that leaders are different. It is difficult to develop leadership skills, meanwhile managers are attempting to protect their positions.
