Metaphysics the School of Thought
Metaphysics the school of thought is based on the word metaphysics which means is a
The type philosophy or study that uses broad concepts to help define reality and our
understanding. Metaphysics study seek to explain inherent or universal elements of reality which
are not easily or experienced by everyday life. Metaphysics uses logic based on the meaning
of human terms, other than on a logic tied to human sense perception of the objective world.
Metaphysics include the study of the nature of the human mind, the meaning of existence, or
nature of space, time, and causality.
The school of thought I chose to write about is called Scholasticism, which is largely
applied in Roman Catholic schools in the educational philosophy called "Thomism." Combining
idealist and realist philosophies in a framework that studied the ideas of Aristotle, the realist,
with idealist notions of truth. The Scholasticism movement encouraged the logical and
philosophical study of beliefs of the church, legitimizing scientific inquiry within a religious
framework. No method in philosophy has been condemned more than the Scholastics. No
philosophy has been more grossly misrepresented. And this is true not only of the details, but
also of the most essential elements of Scholasticism. Two charges, especially, against
the Schoolmen. First, that they confounded philosophy with theology; then that they
made reason subservient to authority. The Scholasticism is, first, its clear delimitation of the
respective domains of philosophy and theology, and its advocacy of the use of reason. Some
people said scholasticism is a boring, dry system emphasizing memorization. However, to many
respects it was seeking to settle questions concerning reality. The disputed Questions of
Thomas Aquinas, rather than his Summa, point out the vibrancy of the system. The philosophical
aspects of scholasticism worked with both faith and reason in an attempt to understand reality
from the viewpoint of a human being.
