Media Reflection
The name of the company is The Shop. It is a premier auto customization shop. There is an artist on-staff who does all the artwork for the company. The logo utilizes crosses in its lettering - Christian symbols. A cross is an instrument of the torturous execution of Jesus. However I'm not quite sure if the intention is to thoroughly express Christianity or merely give a subliminal message or maybe it has nothing to do with Christianity at all. It could just be an Arrow Cross, which white supremacists have used as a symbol for centuries. This may also explain the Gothenburg font which, was (and still is) a commonly used Nazi font.
When I first received the advertisement (which was for my personal use) I comment to my wife how nice it appeared - not examining it to understand why. The layout, coloring and use of graphics is pleasant. The logo utilizes many crosses, and most people in society associate a cross with Jesus Christ. I definitely believe this piece of advertisement is communicating a message - maybe two. It uses crosses and stylized font. One might argue what message it's trying to convey, however most people just view the cross as a Christian symbol and move-on. Most likely the designer intended that way; this way the secondary symbolism (i.e. political- fascism) only attracts a small segment of society. As I mentioned it is a very nice piece of advertisement, which is a positive. The Christian symbolism is so slight that it is not a negative - in fact, it is twisted so that it does not accurately reflect Christianity - it's a very hip looking post card, which is a positive. The ONLY potential negative that I see, is if someone knows that white-supremacy groups use the cross-star as a symbol - and they're not part of that group. Personally, I like the appearance of the advertisement. It attracted my attention and made me want to check-out their business. The symbolism does not sway me one way or another, the artwork and graphics on-the-other-hand does - good branding.
