Me in the American University in Cairo
Man has to take important decisions which deeply affect his life. It is not a problem, but it just needs concentration especially when it comes to his future and life. Every decision affects man`s happiness directly or not. It is the thing that made psychologists do researches about taking decisions, how that process affects man`s happiness, whether man`s decisions are in pursuit of happiness or not and whether man can estimate the effects of his decisions on his happiness well or not. The Futile Pursuit of Happiness, an article by Jon Gertner, a contributing writer for money magazine, contains researches about making decisions in pursuit of happiness. Joining the American University in Cairo is one of my life experiences with which I am going to confirm the ideas of some researches mentioned in the article.
Five months ago, I had to make the most important decision in my life. When I answered my phone, and I was told that I had been approved as a student in AUC -the American University in Cairo-. I thought that moment would never be forgotten. I was very happy then, I ran fast everywhere and I called my parents telling them the surprise. Something went wrong with me. I realized that I had been approved in Cairo University three months before. In that moment, I had an inner argument. One of my sub personalities wanted AUC as it is known to be much better in education and its reputation is excellent. Another one wanted Cairo University to be with all my friends and to make use of the 99.4 percent in Thanawya Aama. Those two sub personalities made many arguments, and I was waiting to make my decision after they finish. My first sub personality tried to convince me saying that new methods of education would be found in AUC. Using technologies, presentations and debates cannot be found in Cairo University. "AUC is better in the education methods, but most experts, engineers, doctors whom you personally know graduated from Cairo University, and those skills can be taught anywhere else, you do not have to take that risk just be like your father and with your friends," the other personality replied.
It was the time to make the decision; I had to choose one of them, but which one should I choose? "It is perplexing," I said; the most important thing is to feel happiness. My happiness is to find better education as I give due care to the teaching process and science. New and perfect methods make me love the university and I will never feel that studying is something imposed on me. In AUC I will take courses which I can`t take anywhere else. I will find many resources and technologies like highly equipped laboratories which are impossible to be found in Cairo University. Those potentialities will make studying interesting; it will be an easy task to succeed if I study interesting courses using interesting methods. Moreover, I will be distinguished between my friends due to being in an international university. I will deal with people from other cultures; I will have friends from them too, so I this will broaden my mind and I will improve my general knowledge aswell. All those advantages in AUC are much more important than being with my friends whom I can meet anywhere else, and it deserves taking the risk. As for experts and doctors whom I personally know, maybe they are all from Cairo University because they are friends of my father who graduated from it, so I am pro the ideas of my first sub personality. Consequently, I called my father telling him that I decided to join AUC and asking him to come with me to pay fees and to finish the measures.
I was very happy in the first month as I found what I had already imagined. I also found other delightful things which I had never imagined when I was told about the system, the teaching process, and potentialities with which AUC provides us. The teaching method is really perfect. Professors and assistants are very helpful; they helped me to come over many obstacles which hindered me. There is a helpful system of teaching; there are office hours for every professor and assistant if I want to ask them any questions. Clinics -like physics clinic- also exist if I need something in the course. Activities in the university surprised me due to their effective events in which I can participate. Those activities would teach me many useful things in addition to being exciting and attractive. They would make my life not restricted
