Materialism has become a global phenomenon whereby most people indulge in endless material goods consumption. Materialism has caused an instilled perception in people to indulge in higher quality goods. This causes a recent trend whereby there is an increasingly number of people being on the constant pursue of material goods. The rise of standard of living of people due to globalization has cause people to demand for more and more high quality goods to satisfy their materialistic nature. The manufacturer of the material goods would thus have to spend more effort and resources on the packaging of goods in order to make their goods more appealing and competitive. Such actions have caused a great stress on the environment which in turn increases the rate and extent of depletion of the environment in the long run. For example, Japan is a well developed country and the Japanese enjoy high standard of living. With such high standard of living, the Japanese thus places great emphasize on the packaging of goods to cater to the materialistic nature of people, where people choose to buy goods which appears to be more appealing to them. This causes an increase in the extent of consumption, hence we can say that materialism is the single most important cause in deteriorating the environment at a much faster pace and to a greater extent as compared to the past, where materialism does not exist as a global phenomenon.
