Today commemorates the anniversary of world war one, it is where we can remember all of the sacrifices made by our ancestors and how the beliefs they fought so hard for have made our country and our people who we are today.
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne sparked World War 1, this is because it caused Russia to declare war on Austria-Hungary and due to the complex alliance system many more countries including New Zealand joined to back up their allies. World War 1 was the first modern war and was named the 'war to end all wars'. The war started on June 28th 1914 and ended on the 11th November 1918.
