Managing Organizations and People- Motor Parts Corporation
Bob Marvin is the president of Motor Parts Corporation (MPC). In this case, Bob Marvin is having issues with Al Shepherd's work performance. Al Shepherd is one of the vice presidents at Motor Parts Corporation and his wife, Ruth, has a malignant brain tumor. Al Shepherd has not been spending a lot of time at the office because he has wanted to spend as much time with his wife as possible as she is struggling to stay alive. Although Al Shepherd has been spending a lot of time out of the office, he is still staying on top of his job tasks and completing them on time. Bob Marvin has a great amount of concern with Al Shepherd's methods of work and feels as though he hasn't been putting his 100% in to the job lately. Bob Marvin discusses Al Shepherd's performance with Mike Jones (consultant of MPC) and wants to find a successful resolution to this issue.
This case is about managing organizations and people. Many of the employees at Motor Parts Corporation are noticing that they are having troubles with working around Al Shepherd's schedule for meeting his wife because of her medical condition. The other employees at Motor Parts Corporation feel as though even know Al Shepherd's problems are extremely serious, they feel that they all have their own variations of problems as well. Such as, Jay Unger (VP of Marketing) had a son who recently was expelled from college and was in rehabilitation for a drug dependency problem. Another employee, Pete Arnell, was in the middle of a divorce and many other employees had serious problems as well. These employees feel that they should be treated the same as Al Shepherd and they feel that Al Shepherd shouldn't have special attention just because his wife is critically ill. I feel that a good way of solving this issue would be, hiring a psychologist that would be able to council the employees for free. I feel that the psychologist would help the employees of MPC with issues that they are having inside and outside of working. By having a psychologist at MPC all of the time, employees will be able to be counseled whenever it is needed. I feel that this will be very beneficial for the company and employees will be able to be more concentrated on work, stay on top of tasks and put all of their energy in the company's goals.
An additional critical issue that is occurring in this case is that there is poor communication methods used between employees. Throughout the entire article, Bob Marvin is having issues with Al Shepherd's job performance. Instead of Bob Marvin discussing his issues with Al Shepherd, he first discusses everything with one of their fellow employees, Mike Jones (management professor/ planning consultant to MPC) because he doesn't want to seem too insensitive to Al Shepherd. I feel that as the president of MPC, Bob Marvin should concentrate on what is best for the company and not on his employee's feelings. I believe that he should also work
