EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The American data communications and telecommunications equipment giant Motorola Solutions has been losing some of its sheen of late. The company, having strength of over 500 employees in its India office recently shrunk, selling off its enterprise business to world technology leader Zebra Technologies on October 24 2014.Prior to this acquisition, Motorola Solutions India was composed of the Government, Public Safety and Enterprise Mobility Solutions divisions. As a result of the change in restructuring of the organization, the employee size and overall fabric of the organization has altered considerably.

This report seeks to analyze the downsizing or restructuring policies followed by the company and the impact on employee relations in the firm. It also seeks to identify domains in which the company might leverage its human resources more effectively.

We focus on assessing the extent to which the current human resource policies and practices are aligned with the strategy of the firm, the degree of internal consistency and consistency with the strategy and provide feasible recommendations for organizational action.

The basis for the project has been primary as well as secondary research- for the former we personally interviewed the Motorola Solutions India Human Resources Head Ms. Mona Chadha, Assistant Manager (HR)  at the Motorola office in Gurgaon, Haryana (face-to-face interview) as well employees from the organization about their experiences (LinkedIn). We also had telephonic interviews with a Marketing Manager and Finance Officer to get a full picture of the operations at Motorola Solutions, India. As a part of the secondary research, we referred to relevant articles, books and websites.

  1. AN INTRODUCTION TO MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS AND ITS BUSINESS

Headquartered in Chicago, Motorola Solutions, Inc. is an American data communications and telecommunications equipment provider and a subsidy of Motorola Inc. The parent company was established in 1928 by two brothers Galvin and Joseph and slowly but steadily rose to become an industry leader and innovator. Originally, the company specialized in mobile phone manufacturing and equipment production; however in 2011 there was a split. One company, Motorola Solutions concentrates on police technologies, radios, and commercial needs. The other company, Motorola Mobility was sold off to Google and is the mobile handset producer.

Motorola Solutions began trading as an independent company in 2011. However the company had been bleeding for years and as a result had been compelled to sell off constituents to other businesses. It sold off its networks division to Nokia Siemens Networks in 2011 and the loss making Motorola Mobility was acquired by Google early in 2011 as part of the Internet major’s strategy to bolster its capabilities in the Android platform. In October 2014, Motorola Solutions India further reduced in size to 80 employees at present. This major restructuring has been a result of many difficult, hard-hitting decisions that have had and will be having long-term consequences for the company.
