After briefly reviewing The Evolution of Management Thought by Wren & Bedeian (2009), it was clear that this text is an important piece in understanding the history of management theories. Conversely, the website at http://globaledge.msu.edu/ is a view into the future of globalization in the professional business world. The text and the website mentioned above are both important in ways that are discussed below. Both introduce the study of management while discerning between what is right and wrong as decisions are made in organizations.
According to Wren & Bedeian (2009), "history may not repeat itself, but it does provide a baseline for evaluating the significance of new theories" (p.15). To understand where managers or organizations are going, we must also understand where we have been. History provides valuable lessons about organizations, and this can provide a useful view into the future.
The study of management is a "living" process with changing ideas about the nature of work, the nature of people, and the role of organizations. A study of the past contributes to a more logical picture of the present. This is important to the learning experience of an MBA program. Understanding the integration of the evolving management theories and practices can help us identify new ways of studying old thought processes.
The text starts with management theories from ancient times, before and during industrialization, scientific management, and works its way to current theories in discussions today.
