Planning means to look ahead and map out future courses of action. Planning is preparation and it is a system of activities which determines when, how, and who is going to perform a specific job. Planning takes into consideration the employees that are available, prospective employees, and resources of the organization. Planning is a basic management function which includes detailed plans to achieve a balance of the needs of the organization and the available resources. Planning is deciding how to put things in order to perform business functions in order to reach a goal.

The planning process puts the goals and objectives into focus for the employees. Planning works as a blue-print, taking small steps, in a certain order, to build up to reaching the goal. Planning brings order to large idea and it rationalizes why and how the goal is to be reached. Business is full of ups and downs and the idea of planning helps to reduce some of the risks and complications that can possibly arise. Uncertainties are unpredictable but with a well balanced plan in place some of the risks are thought of and revisions have been put into place to overcome them. Planning provides a base of control. With a well thought out and detailed plan, more control is placed on reaching the main objective for the organization.

There are many steps to the planning function of management. First, the objectives have to be established and goals need to be specified. In doing this, management will determine if the objectives and goals are practical, workable, and attainable. In the planning process there is always the creation of a secondary plan which helps to achieve the main goal. Secondary plans are always there to support the main plan and help to put the main plan in motion and keep it on task. Next, after the plans have been determined, it is important to inform those who will be working on the plan of the necessary steps and get their input and begin to motivate them.

Boeing Corporation is a massive company and management planning is essential to its structure and operation. Boeing operates on a global level, producing aircraft for commercial use as well as for military use around the world. Boeing aircraft are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration or FAA, because of this Boeing is required to have extensive planning in order to operate efficiently. Management planning has lead to the success of the Boeing Company and is used on all levels and in all departments of the company.

There are many factors that play a role in and can affect the management planning process for the Boeing Company. Legal issues play a large role in the planning process. Boeing produces a product that, in an accident, can injure or kill human beings, the company must obey laws.
