Loyalty to family
- “Conditions were good. Families would not be split up”(36)
This shows that they were able to stay with their families and that life was o.k.
- “– not to lose him. Not to be left alone”(39)
This quote shows that he is loyal to his family because he doesn’t want to leave his father.
- “I thought of my father. But I was glad all the same. To see the whole works go up in fire – what revenge!”(67)
This shows that his father was still in his heart and that he would be happy to see the concentration camp burn to the ground.
- “Father! Father! Wake up. They’re trying to throw you out of the carriage….”(104)
This quote shows that he still believes that his father is alive and we later find out that he woke up his father and saved his life.
- “I held onto my father’s hand – the old, familiar fear: not to lose him”(109)
This means that he did not want to lose his father because he loved him dearly.
Loss of innocence
- “My throat was dry, the words choked in it, paralysing my lips”(24)
This quote relates to the central idea because it shows that he could not even say a word because of what terrible things lay ahead of them.
- “Her little boy clung to her; he did not cry out; he did not say a word. He was not even weeping now”(35)
This is showing that a little boy is not crying even when his mom could be killed right before his eyes.
- “Humanity? Humanity is not concerned with us. Today anything is allowed”(42)
This shows that they have lost there innocence because they have no humanity and are not treated like humans.
- “No one had said the prayer for the dead over them. Sons abandoned their fathers’ remains without a tear”(97)
This quote means that they have lost faith in god and relates to loss of innocence by being able to just leave there fathers without a care.
- “Oh, to strangle the doctor and the others! To burn the whole world! My father’s murderers! But the cry stayed in my throat”(114)
This quote shows that he wants to take revenge but he can not do so because he does not have the courage to do so.
