Purpose:
Why are the six colors of the flames in the experiment?
To find the six colors of the flames in the experiment
Materials:
All the chemicals and equipments used in the lab for this experiment are as follow:
eye protection 5 ml dilute hydrochloric acid solution
nichrome test wire 3 ml sodium chloride solution
test tube (2) Samples of the following solids:
* Sodium nitrate
* Sodium chloride
* Strontium chloride
* Lithium chloride
* Potassium chloride
test-tube rack
Bunsen burner
Spot plate
Method:
1. The samples of the the five solids were collected on the spot plate and the 3 ml sodium chloride solution and 5 ml dilute hydrochloric acid were collected in a small test tube.Both test tubes were placed in the test tube rack.
2. The Bunsen burner was then lit and adjusted until it was burning with blue flame.
3. To clean the nichrome test wire, it was dipped in the hydrochloric acid and then held the wire in the flame of the Bunsen burner. This was repeated five times until the wire was not adding any color to the flame.
4. A small amount of the solid sodium nitrate was picked up with the loop of the nichrome test wire. The end of the wire was held in the flame for several seconds and the color of the flame was observed and recorded.
5. The wire was then cleaned as explained in step 3
6. The nichrome test wire was dipped in the sodium chloride solution. The end of the wire was held in the flame .The color of the flame was then recorded.
7. Step 4 was repeated with the other solid samples. The wire was cleaned after each test.
