Academic Freedom:
'The Limitations to our right to express our self"
Academic Freedom is the that the freedom of inquiry by students and faculty members is essential to the mission of the academy, and that scholars should have freedom to teach or communicate ideas or facts including those that are inconvenient to external political groups or to authorities without being targeted for repression, job loss, or imprisonment. This topic is becoming an issue because there are facts that back up that academic freedom are being limited in collages. Rules, Guidelines and Laws are being passed by state congresses and colleges and other institution to limit Academic freedom in colleges and universities based on ideas or beliefs There are sources that suggest that limitations has been occurring on the issue of academy freedom.
The article The worst bill ever for a academic freedom about how the Arizona legislation was planning to pass a law that if in enforce and enacted would have become one of the worst law passed that would lead to the limitation of Academic freedom. The law would state that a professor cannot "endorse support or oppose any pending ,proposed or enacted local ,state or federal legislation, regulation or rule". Also professors cannot advocate one side of a social ,political or cultural issue that is a matter of partisan controversy To better understand this a example is that a professor may not teach a class based on the ideological aspect like his opposition in women's right to vote because of the fact that he would be opposing a enacted legislation by the federal government under the United States Constitution and the amendment. On the other hand certain topics like abortion and evolution should not be thought because of the controversies that arose due to different ideas views and beliefs. The punishment for these offenses are that the attorney general or county attorney can files a civil claim meaning he or she would be fined and also disciplinary action would be taken. this law is appalling because it requires the Arizona board of regents for universities and the state attorney general for community colleges to publish guidelines banning controversial ideas, and forces all instructors to undergo raining every year in these unconstitutional restrictions on free expression. This source is a example that helps us understand that if these limitations are enacted people would lose interest in other aspect of college because sometime people are drawn by these to controversies to learn explore and understand different ideas and beliefs.
