List and briefly discuss the 10 qualities of leadership reviewed in Chapter 3.
Ten Leadership Qualities--How Do You Rate?
1. Vision: a sense of what could and should be done. The first requirement of a leader is the strong sense of purpose. A vision of what should and could be is a basic force that enable the leader to recognize what must be done and to do it.
2. Ability: job knowledge and expertise to achieve results. The leader must know the job. Employees seldom respect a leader who constantly must rely on others when making decisions, giving guidance, or solving problems. It is also important that the leader must keep job knowledge current. Failure to keep up leads to lack of confidence and loss of employee support. A leader must have keen mind to understand information, formulates strategies, and makes correct decisions.
3. Enthusiasm: personal commitment that invigorates and motivates people. Enthusiasm shown by a leader generates enthusiasm in followers.
4. Stability: emotional adjustment and objectivity. The leader must understand his or her own world and how it relates to the world of others.
5. Concerns for others. At the heart of caring leadership is concern for others. The leader must not look down on others or treat them as machines. The leader must be sincerely and deeply concerned about the welfare of people, and the result is trust among people. Loyalty to followers generates loyalty to the leader.
6. Self-confidence: People quickly sense a leader's self confidence, and this quality results in increased commitment and performance. If, on the other hand, leaders lack self-confidence, people may question their authority and may even disobey order.
7. Persistence: Leaders must have drives and determination to stick with difficult tasks until they are completed. If we are leaders, we have to ask ourselves, Do we have self-drive to finish our jobs?
8. Vitality: Effective leaders are typically described as electric, vigorous, active, and full of life, no matter how old they are or how physically disabled they are.
9. Charisma: Charisma is difficult to defined, but the result is admiration. Enthusiasm, and loyalty of followers.
10. Integrity: The most important of leadership is integrity, understood as honesty, strength of character, and courage.
