In the lecture, the speaker made several points regarding the benefits of forests fire suppression. The speaker argues that the suppression of forest fires is indeed causing negative effects. However, the reading contends that the suppression of forest fires is beneficial in a lot ways. The lecture casts doubt on the reading by giving several explanations that are contrary to the reading.

Firstly, the lecture casts doubt by saying that because of the fire suppression oaks are indeed in danger. However the reading contends that the oaks formed continous canopy. But the lecture contradicts this by saying the old oaks grew so thick that the younger oaks get little sunshine. So new oaks could not mature enough to replace the old ones. Also the maples are invading the forests and giving less sunshine to the younger oaks.

Secondly, the lecture points out that the nutrient availability is not affected by the forest fires. In contrary the reading says that soil nutrient is decreased because of the burning. The lecture weakens this point made by the reading by saying that even total nutrients are decreased the total nutrients available for the plan is actually increased.

Finally, the lecture challenges the reading by saying deer population effects the forest oaks. The reading contends that the deer population is increased because of the suppression. The lecture argues that because of the increased deer population new oak failed to grow because the deer like to eat oak sampling futhur affecting the young mature oaks.

In sum , the lecture is in contrary to the findings of the reading. The points made by the lecture put the findings of the reading in doubt.
