Lean On Me Song Analysis

In the song "Lean on Me," written by Bill Withers, I believe the main theme of the song is to help people. Whether the people around are having issues, or just not feeling up to their standards, they can always lean on the speaker, which is what the song is portraying. The speaker is willing to help out, knowing that a time will come when he/she will need help of their own, and will want other people to lean on. The first verse of the song states how everyone has hard times, but we should all know that things will almost always get better if you are willing to help yourself and rely on those around you. In the second verse, the speaker tells how if someone is in need of help, they will help them get through their tough times. They say this because they know that later, when the speaker is in need of help, themself, they can then rely on someone whom they have helped. In the third stanza of the song, the speaker tells to everyone that they should not be ashamed to lean on someone when they need to. Also, the listener should not be too prideful as to not show that they are in need. The chorus of the song goes along with the rest of the song, stating that everybody needs someone to lean on sometimes, and that it's alright to lean on the speaker, because they understand. A few verses after the chorus are repeated, but the last verse tells you that the speaker is willing to share the load, if only the listener will just call to let the speaker know that they need help, which sums up the whole song.

I think this song relates to me, because I've always been a peacemaker of sorts. I'm usually the one that my friends come to when they need help, or advice. I'm open to people leaning on me, as the song says. To me, it's a good thing to make friends that rely on you, so that it can be reversed when I need help. Personally, I am very willing to share someone else's load, if they are having hard times at the moment. I'm always there for my friends, and even other people who are willing to search for help. I've been referred to as a great friend, and I'm proud to be able to hold up to that status. I like to believe I am a comforting friend, and I would never let a friend down in a time of need. The line, "And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on," more specifically relates to me, and my weakness for people in need. In my opinion, almost anyone is deserving of help, if they know they need it. I really don't like seeing people being ignored that are in need of aid or comfort. These things are the kinds that are simple to give, and you don't need anything but time to help.
