1. Introduction

Leadership and good governance program is a two year graduate program that aimed to solve the leadership problems and to increase leadership competency in the public sector. To achieve this objective the institution designed the internship program in addition to theoretical courses. As per the curriculum, the internship program is aimed at attaching students to public institutions for practical training after having theoretical background.

As per the schedule, I was assigned in National Meteorology Agency of Ethiopia for this program for two months (from October 17- December 3/2013). During the stay in the organization, I have been involved in the practical application of different Directorates of the Agency. Getting involved in these Directorates, I have gained practical lessons that will help me as a base for my future leadership in public sectors. The details will be shown as follows.

2. Back ground, Vision and mission of the NMSA

Background

The government of Ethiopia officially established the National Meteorological Services Agency in December 31, 1980 under proclamation No 201 0f 1980. After the intervention of BPR, the NMA has organized in 26 directorates including 11 branch directorates and 1200 principal stations. Currently, the Agency has 802 employees working for the organization.

Objectives of the Agency as stipulated in the proclamation include: to investigate and study the weather and climatic condition of Ethiopia in order to exploit the beneficial effects for economic and social development, to establish and operate a national network of meteorological stations, disseminate advice and educational information to public on weather regarding meteorological issues, provide meteorological services to all stakeholders, collaborators and the general public, provide advice and early warnings regarding the adverse effects weather and climate to pertinent institutions and the general public.

Mission

By collecting, organizing and analyzing meteorological and related information, and observing weather, climate adverse climate and atmospheric air-pollution, NMA provides meteorological services and early warnings that contribute for the wellbeing of socio-economic activities of the nation; and protect the life and property from climate-related hazards.

Vision

Realizing an Agency firm that supports Ethiopia's socio-economic development by providing world-class meteorological services by 2022.
