1. Describe a situation in which a wireless LAN would be preferable to a wire-based LAN.
One situation would be if you are connecting multiple devices(laptops, mobile phones, tablets) to the network that are not in the same room as the LAN. In this situation wireless LAN would be preferable. However if you have computers within the same room of the LAN; the most cost-effective option would be a wire-based LAN (Unshielded Twisted Pair). If the location is temporary, wireless LAN would be the best option.
2. Suppose you need to install a wire/cable-based LAN in an environment in which there
was the possibility of considerable electromagnetic noise. What type of medium would
you recommend? Justify your recommendation.
A shielded Twisted Pair cable would be my recommendation. The reason is that the purpose of the shielding is to reduce electromagnetic noise. It is more expensive than Unshielded Twisted Pair but if the goal is to reduce electromagnetic noise it would be the best option. Also careful installation (use of Velcro) must be done to insure that the cable isn't damaged.
3. Supposed you need to install a new LAN and you need to buy or build patch cables for it.
You will have 150 hosts on the LAN and need to decide if it is more economical to buy
ready-made cables or make your own cables. Assume that the length of each cable is 10
feet. If you build your own, you will need cable, connectors, a crimping tool and a cable
tester. Assume a labor cost of $1 per cable when building your own. Using the data
below, compute the costs for ready-made cables and building cables in-house. Recall how
clients connect to a network and how many patch cables each client will need for this
connection. You can assume each host will only have one network card for one network
connection.
Sample Costs of Ready-Made Cable Self Made Cable Costs
UTP-10 foot $ 4.99 Bulk cable, 1000 feet $ 175.00
UTP-25 foot $ 9.99 RJ-45 connectors, 250 $ 100.00
STP-10 foot $ 9.99 Crimping tool, RJ-45 $ 12.99
STP-25 foot $12.99 Cable tester $ 17.45
It would be more economical to make your own cables.
