Kristen’s Cookie Case

1.) A rush order for one batch (one dozen cookies) would take 26 minutes to be completed.[pic 1]

2.) The operating time for 4 hours would be 60 x 4 = 240 minutes.

The flow time for one dozen would be 26 minutes. For two dozen cookies, the whole flow

time would be 36 minutes. From there we can derive the equation:

16+10n <= 4 x 60

n= 22.4 so from here we can conclude that in a night of 4 hours, we can fill out 22 orders,

assuming that each order is just one-dozen cookies.

3.)   For Kristen, she will have to wash out the bowl and mix ingredients in the bowl which

takes 6 minutes. She will also dish them out onto a tray taking 2 minutes which results in = 8

minutes for Kristen.

For the roommate, she has to put cookies in the oven and set the thermostat which takes 1

minute. Packing takes 2 minutes while accepting the payment takes another 1 minute. The time it

takes to take out the cookies from the oven is negligent This results in = 4 minutes for her

roommate.

4.)  For a one dozen batch, it would take 6 mins (washing and mixing) + 2 mins (dishing out) + 1

minute (thermostat) + 2 minutes (packing) + 1 minute (accepting payment) = 12 minutes

total.

For two dozen cookies, it would take 6 mins + ((2 mins +1 min + 2 mins) x 2) + 1 min = 17

minutes total. So yes, ordering two dozen will take longer (17>12) but if we average the 17 minutes for two dozen, it comes out to be about 8.5 minutes per dozen for an order of two dozen

Yes we can give a discount for two dozen orders. If we compute this through labour

costs, one dozen of cookies takes 12 minutes to make; two dozen takes 17 minutes to

make. If we make “x” equal to the labour rate per hour, then the labour rate for one dozen is

equal to 0.2x (12 minutes/60 minutes = 0.2). For a two dozen order it’s 0.142x per dozen ( (17 minutes/60 minutes)/2 ). Therefore the labour rate is cheaper per dozen if the order is two dozen and we can give a discount. For two dozen, the discount can be up to 0.058x per dozen (0.2-0.142x).

5.)  They should only use one food processor. It is enough for one flow time. There would not be any improvements in speed if they bought multiple food processors. This is a non-bottleneck resource and increasing the capacity of non-bottleneck resources do not increase the capacity rate of the process the whole process. However, you would want to buy 3 baking trays in total so you can bake a batch of three dozen cookies. One tray for dishing out, another tray for baking, and the 3rd tray for cooling.
