The Kashmir earthquake was a huge earthquake in the center Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. The Kashmir earthquake occurred on Saturday October 8th 2005 at 8:50:40 am at the epicenter. The location of the earthquake was 34.493 degrees north and 73.629 degrees east. This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.6. This earthquake had a huge impact in Pakistan.
This earthquake happened near the city of Muzaffarabad, affecting Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. As of November 8th, the government of Pakistan's official death total was 75,000! The earthquake also affected on countries in the surrounding region. Shaking was felt in Tajikistan and western China. Officials say nearly 1,400 people also died and 6,266 people were injured India. Four people in Afghanistan including a young girl who died in Jalalabad after a wall collapsed on her.
More than 69,000 people were injured and extensive damage in northern Pakistan and 80% of the town was damaged. In Anantang, Baramuia, Jammu and Srinagar Kashmir, at least 32,335 buildings collapsed. The strongest aftershock measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.
The majority of the buildings in the affected area in Kashmir are non-engineered reinforced wall construction. The damage of most of the buildings is from ground shaking. Even though, due to the landslide, a large number of buildings located mostly on or near slopes were damaged. It has been said in news reports that 30%-50% of the buildings were either destroyed or badly damaged in the main event in Muzaffarabad.
