The program that I chose is the Chicago Area Project which was founded by Clifford Shaw a University of Chicago sociologist in 1930. He felt like by making the community better that he could decrease juvenile delinquency. They residents to address any issues and come up with solutions to solve them. The Chicago Area Project’s mission is: “To work toward the prevention and eradication of juvenile delinquency through the community self-help efforts in communities where the need is the greatest” Chicagoareaproject.org. Chicago Area Project offers direct services such as: cultural, educational, and recreation programs. Chicago Area Project advocates and works with other groups to improve the juvenile court systems, schools, and employment. They also offer community organizing such as working with community leaders and residents to identify problems and come up with solutions. The Chicago Area Project has been very successful throughout the years by building roots by technical assistance and training. By playing various roles such as facilitator, grants manager, and convener Chicago Area Project strengthens, enhances, and improves community life.
They offer a variety of programs for juveniles such as: Financial Education Program, Juvenile Justice Diversion Program, Youth as Resources, and Career Development, Training, and Employment Services just to name a few. The FEP helps low income families with money management. It teaches them how to spend their money wisely and how to save money. The JJDP is in collaboration with the Cook County State’s Attorney Office and the Probation officers as an alternative diversion program. It encourages the juveniles to engage in things that are positive to make them into better residents of their communities. The Youth as Resources is like a community service program that encourages the juveniles to help around the community. Lastly the CDTES helps low income families break through the obstacles that may be keeping them from being successful. Some of the services that they provide are: supportive services, referrals, and direct services to help individuals join the workforce.
There are so many more services that are available at the Chicago Area Project. There are many services that are inside of the main services. I chose this particular program for that reason, they seemed to be the most helpful. I saw that the services were endless and that it would be a so called one stop shop for everything that you may need and if they did not offer what you were looking for then their referral services were great as well. I personally know a few people who used their services and had nothing but good thing to say about them.
