Jagannath Electricals
Alka Mahapatra, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Jagannath Electricals Pvt Ltd, sat in the balcony of the building in Saheed Nagar, overlooking the 220kV/11Kv substation, that had been the lifeline of the entire commercial establishments in and around the area. While sipping the green tea, she was going through the financial results of Jagannath Electricals for the year 2009, the company’s profits had remained stagnant from FY 2007 to FY 2009, inspite of increased demand and growth in Circuit breakers industry, which happened to be the core business of Jagannath Electricals.
Just when she was pondering about the financial statements, she got a call from Mr. Arun Kapadia, COO of F&T, who offered to outsource a large order for the manufacturing of the SF6 circuit breakers to Jagannath Electricals with certain terms and conditions.
Jagannath Electricals already had got an upgradation proposal from BBA for manufacturing of Minimum Oil Circuit Breaker (MOCB’s) which was an add-on version of their already existing product ie. Bulk Oil Circuit Breakers. Alka had already done some ground research about the proposal from BBA and was left in a fix now with another proposal from F&T.
(kala/Arjun) can add here some more thing about financial statements showing weird things.
Company History
Jagannath Electricals was an 18 year old enterprise started by Deepak Patra, an electrical engineer by profession. Jagannath Electricals, initially manufactured low voltage miniature circuit breakers of rated current not more than 100A. As the company grew, the company had started manufacturing high voltage Bulk Oil Circuit Breakers (BOCB) which could break current up to the magnitude of 2000A. The transition of moving to high capacity current ratings, by upgrading technology and increasing capital spending had bore fruits for the company, as it had got vital contracts from Switchgear majors like Khimens and BBA for supplying them BOCB’s.
Deepak Patra’s daughter, Alka Mahapatra (then Alka Patra) had returned to join her father’s business after a masters degree in Financial Management from NMIMS, Mumbai. She had continued to be an involved member of the company, even after her marriage and was recently promoted to be the CFO of Jagannath Electricals.
Deepak Patra, CEO of Jagannath Electricals had been meticulous in his planning and strategy to move to manufacturing of high voltage Bulk Oil Circuit Breakers, as he had foreseen a huge increase in demand of circuit breakers in the Indian Power Industry, wherein the government was all set to liberalize the Transmission and Distribution sector and open biddings for contracts in certain ear-marked areas. Although high voltage Circuit breakers was a derived demand, its demand was elastic.
