Author of Into the Wild Jon Krakauer presents the events of Into the Wild out of chronological order, establishing what happened when, can challenge the reader. To sum up Into the Wild it is the true story of Chris McCandless, a young Emory graduate who is found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in September 1992, when he is twenty-four. McCandless grows up in a wealthy Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C., and is a very gifted athlete and scholar, who from an early age shows deep intensity, passion, and a strict moral compass. After graduating from high school McCandless spends the summer alone on a road trip across the country, during which he discovers that his father secretly had a second family during Chris’s childhood.
Chris McCandless was not your typical person that valued money and material things. McCandless couldn't care less about those types of things. He cared about the truth more than anything and that's what he was seeking. I feel as if this is the reason why him and his parents did not have a respectable and bonding relationship. His parents were the complete polar opposites of him. All they cared about and valued was money and materialistic things. Chris obviously didn't like this trait about his parents and this was the root cause of most of the problems they came in contact with.
Now that you have a little background information on Chris Mccandless and his story, it brings a lot of controversy. Among those who read the book many feel Chris McCandless was a greenhorn risk taker. Others believe he was prepared for his journey and his encounters. I qualify on this particular topic about Chris. I don't believe he was a greenhorn ristaker, or he that was totally prepared. I can see both sides to Chris McCandless’s story and how he came about it adventure.
On one hand, yes, I do see how Chris can be seen as a greenhorn risktaker because he didn't bring many supplies or much food with him knowing he was going to be gone for a long period of time. On the other hand, I see how Chris was prepared for his adventures in Alaska. McCandless knew what he wanted to do and where he was going. McCandless had the plan of getting away from people and society. To me, that is being prepared by knowing where you’re going, why you're going, and what you wanna achieve out of it.
To conclude, everyone had their opinion of what Chris was and if what he did was right or wrong. People want adventure and excitement. They want to get out of the sight of their parents and live their own life, having their own stories to tell. Chris McCandless was no different. McCandless seems to both run away from his troubles, as well as run to a new life. The personal home life he was running from was something anyone would want to run from. From what his sister described in the film, their family life was not a pleasant one. No one can really blame Chris for wanting to start a better life for himself.
