1. White a summery of” The Right Passengers” in about 150 words.
The story is written by, Waqar Ahmed, in 2008.
The story is about a man named Nadeem Riaz, who is a taxi driver in Manhattan in New York. Nadeem Riaz is an immigrant from Pakistan and he is only doing this taxi job, so he can send the money to his family and help them in Pakistan. The police in Manhattan is looking for Nadeem, because they do not trust that he has a green card. In the story, Nadeem lights the taxi sign and escapes from the police – A Saturday midnight Nadeem sees a drunk boy and a girl who want to drive with Nadeem. The boy is from South Africa and the girl is a Caucasian. Nadeem and the boy are having a conversation how to be accepted as a person from Pakistan in New York, because a lot of people are against the immigrants who are living in Manhattan.
2. Characterize Nadeem Riaz.
Nadeem Riaz is a taxi driver from Pakistan, who is living as an immigrant in Manhattan where he is driving around in his taxi to see after costumers. Nadeem Riaz is spending all his money to his family in Pakistan, he is having a lot of feelings about his job. It is necessary for him to have this job to help his family, no matter how hard it is. Nadeem is not feeling safe in his new country because he is from Pakistan and all the other people in Manhattan are judging him because of his brown skin.
3. Comment in the conflict in lines 107-161 between Nadeem Riaz And Faisal, the young Pakistani.
In the taxi Nadeem Riaz and the boy Faisal are having a hard conversation in the taxi, because they both are talking about how to be accepted as an immigrant in New York, and how to date girls. The boy does not care of what he is doing, because he is living his life as he wants it to be. And Nadeem is living his life like his religion at home, married a girl and having kids. In the end Nadeem is saying to the boy “son” and after that the boy is falling asleep. So maybe the boy is Nadeem’s son? Or it might show that all the immigrants feel like one big family.
4. Write a short essay (150-200 words) in which you discuss the culture clashes immigrants experience. Relate your essay to the short story.
In this story we meet two cultures, where we see a lot of different ways to live the daily life.
Nadeem is a boy from a poor family, he needed to get away from his family in Pakistan to get a job, so he could help them back home. It is so sad that a state like USA does not accept the immigrants that come to the country. In the story we see how hard Nadeem’s work is, he is working all day and night and does not have any kind of sleep or food at this time. If the costumers will not enter his car, he does not earn any money at all. At the same time, he also has a big problem of being accepted as a person to live in USA like all the other people. When a person comes from another country you often meet racial prejudice. Specially the police of USA always keep an eye on him and they control him all the time to see if he is legally living in USA. That is why they need to see his green card. So when the immigrants or the foreign workers meet each other they feel happy and safe – so much that they feel they are one big family – they stick together and help each other.
