Where I'm From
I am from at the time a thirteen year old girl's womb,
From her warm and embrace arms.
I am from a family that struggles to make ends meat,
From pawning things we had to put food on the table.
I am from fried chicken, collard greens and homemade mac and cheese,
From the sweet cornbread those great grandmas use to make.
I am from the woman, who kept the family strong and well put together,
From now cherishing her memories and being thankful for what she has done.
I am from the glistening sun and cool summer breeze,
From across the street where airplanes takes off.
I am from the pecan to the apple trees,
From where we climb so high, we couldn't figure out how to get down.
I am from the country of Iredell County.
I am from family reunions to cookouts,
From grandma's potato salad and my aunts cooking.
I am from the family where cooking is our talent,
From cooking delicious food, that melts in your mouth
That'll have you coming back for more.
I am from hopscotch, double Dutch, and hide n seek,
From walking to the parks and hanging out at the mall.
I am from building club houses with a bush, sticks and a blanket,
From making mud pie with dirt and water.
I am from the basketball trophies that sit on the shelf,
From playing in middle and high school.
I am from the football games every Friday night,
From cheering fans to the crunk high school band.
I am from the roots of my ancestors, the heritage that's studied in schools today.
I am from the memories that'll always live within me.
I am from my achievements and my accomplishments to come.
